Nice cold treats are not just for your horse when it’s hot, like here in Florida where the temps have been in the upper 90’s. They supply your horse with much needed water they have lost through sweating and also provide tons of fiber that helps keep the digestive tract moving.
Here are some of the safe fruits and veggies you can give your horse and believe me, you will see lots of slobbering as they devour these treats!
Watermelon (and yes, the rind too and I prefer the seedless)
Honey Dew Melon cut into chunks with the rind
Bananas (great source of Potassium)
Corn on the cob
That is just a partial list of things I have personally fed my horse.
Something pretty cool (literally) I like to do is put several fruits and veggies in a small container, cover with water and freeze. Then when fully frozen, take it out to your horse and put in a feed pan on the ground and watch the excitement as they lick and lick until they reach all the neat things you’ve put in the frozen “popsicle”! I keep several of these frozen treats in my freezer so that my horse can have a cool treat at least several times a week. You can even add crushed minerals to this mixture for added benefits.
Enjoy the summer with your horses and keep them cool!

Today I had the pleasure of photographing Liz Howell and her Retired Racehorse Project horse, Whiskey Terms/Little John. Such a beautiful OTTB and well on his way to the Makeover in Lexington, KY in October.

I have always thought that feeding grain to horses was not quite natural considering horses in the wild obviously do not have that luxury. Feeding forage, such as beet pulp, bagged chopped forage, hay pellets, and chopped cubed hay, usually timothy and alfalfa are the best choices. Providing a good free choice mineral will give your horse all it needs to survive. In other words, GRAIN is not a necessity for most horses. My personal horse is a very easy keeper, and he loves the 1 measuring cup of grain he gets 3x’s a day. He prefers to nibble grass and a good hay to munch on day and night. Read more
